Photoinjector Three (Pi3)

Introduction

The Photoinjector Three or Pi3 collaboration is a small, active collaboration involving universities and laboratories interested in upgrading the Fermilab/NICADD Photoinjector Laboratory (FNPL, and formally known as the A0 photoinjector) to a third generation photoinjector. The facility would stimulate advanced research in beam physics and, as an injector for electron accelerators, provide a natural, regional focus for linear collider and free electron laser efforts.  The timing is right for such an endeavor given the continuing interest in advanced accelerator technology and the high-energy physics community’s endorsement of a linear collider.

The Pi3 collaboration held an initial organizational meeting January 3, 2002 and submitted an expression of interest to several institutions February 11, 2002.  To date, we have received encouragement from the Fermilab, Argonne, and LBNL.
