Activities of FNPL from 03/07 - 03/11 Friday Mar 25 th, 2005 minutes at: http://nicadd.niu.edu/fnpl/Operation/Minutes/ * Plan for next week (03/28 - 04/01): Thursday: north cave running (SRF tests) Other days are dedicated to round beam (Rodion) and longitudinal dynamics studies (Rodion + Daniel) - establish beam and measure bunch length with CTR and streak camera - get a two pulses bunch and test whether the structure can be detected by the CTR autocorrelation - take a set of round beam emittance at X3 (1 nC, scan solenoids, gun E-field to maximum possible) - measure spot size evolution along the beamline * Last week activities - Monday and Tuesday: laser work: Jianliang and Rodion commissioned and aligned the pulse stacker. They also tested a thinner BBO crystal to convert IR to green, and measured a 32 % conversion efficiency (40 % improvement compared to the present configuration with a 10 mm BBO) cold gun: Ray work on the cold gun he was able to operate the gun cold at 30 MV/m with a rf pulsae of 140 musec maximum. Ray also measured the Q of the cold gun and reported it is about 2.7 time higher than the measured Q when the gun is at room temperature. - Wednesday: Problem with RF 200 kW klystron (John Reid worked on it all the day) - Thursday/Friday: trying to resume beam operation, many problems/buggs (the machine was off for 10 days), slow down our plans. By friday afternoon Philippe and Daniel finally get beam up to the spectrometer. * Discussion: - Philippe presented the layout of the new user beamline. The beamline SHOULD be installed in April and will support the fast kicker experiment by Gollin (UIUC) et al, the EO sampling experiment (NIU/Rochester) and OTR interferometry experiment (FNAL) - Jamie reported the water system for the laser is now finished and was being leak checked. - John Reid ordered a new power supply for the 200 kW solenoids, one of the present power supply keep trupping every two hours - shutdown: TimeBandwidth did not provide an exact date for the laser delivery. During the shutdown the following item should be done: - install laser and rearrange laser room, - install new user beamline (optical table in cave also) - measure skew quadrupole - update digital camera software - gun klystron should be changed -... ACTION ITEM updated: Mon Mar 25 11:54:13 CST 2005 H8/ calibration of upstream directional coupler and insulator (Markus need to speak to Tim and with Kai to schedule this STATUS?) H13/ Pulse stacker, what do we do? (Rodion, imaging system helped with alignement of pulse stacker) H21/ the laser uniformity problem can this be due to the new (since late summer) tight focusing in the doubling crystal area to improve conversion efficiency? On going work [Rodion] H33/ laser fluctuation since June 1st week [FIXED?] H34/ Need more work on power supply + devise a way to measure the current being put out to the magnet [Jamie] H39/ streak camera new optics for plasma OTR and UV laser streaking. [Jamie, Greg, Rodion, Philippe] UV works need to test OTR H40/ installation of UIUC experiment, beamline design [Philippe, design DONE] H41/ OTRI experiment [Greg] H42/ revisit EO sampling experiment [Jianliang] H43/ laser cooling system upgrade [on-going work soon completed] H44/ do we need to get our rf system out of the TeV LCW and Why [Jamie/Philippe] H45/ O-scope floppy disk [Jamie] H46/ dying gun klystron [Tim K.->John Reid] H47/ dying 200 kW klystron [Tim K.->John Reid] Spare OK -> solenoid power supply H48/ H/V steerer downstream of 9-cell need to be fixed HTV9A-C H49/ skew quad measurements H50/ LINAC-type steerers for user beamline #.50 from Adrian Melissinos: NEEDED LASER STUDIES: 2. beam profile (wavefront) studies both in IR and UV in laser room and on virtual cathode. Use spatial filters 3. study of doubling and quadrupling efficencies with old and new crystal, take a tuning curve POSSIBLE LASER UPGRADE PROJECTS 1. Measure IR pulse length before compression (use diode?) implement cw autocorrelation 2. Install new beamline between multipass and 2-pass -- install spatial filter, rebalance 2-pass amplifiers 4. _harware_: replacing all coolers with new system IV + use existing system III as back-up (see H43) 5. pulse stacker studies, new pulse stacker R&D (see H13)
