Meeting time is Tues 11-12 and Th 10-11 in FW227. Office hours
Tues 10-10:30 and Thur 11-11:30. But this can change
after the first meeting.
A first pass syllabus is below but we can modify this. The topics covered
will be
those which are "most useful". I assume that you already
know many of the chapters (1,2,4,5,6,8).
- Book: Mathematical Methods in the Physics Sciences, Mary Boas
- Extra book: Mathematical Methods with applications to problems in the
physical sciences, Ted Clay Bradbury, 1 copy in Faraday library
Probable Topics
- Chap. 3: Linear Algebra - entire chapter
- Chap. 6: Vector Analysis - mostly skip as should know/covered in 370
- Chap. 10: Tensor Analysis - most of the chapter
- Chap 7: Fourier Series - much of the chapter
- Chap 12: Series Solutions - much of the chapter
- Chap 13: Part. Diff. Eq. -most of the chapter
There will probably not be time for these chapters:
- Chap. 14: Complex Variables
- Chap. 15: Probability and Statistics
- Group theory -- not really in Boas
Grading: 3 take home exams. I will assign problems which we
(meaning not just me) will then do in class. Grades will be 50%
class participation/problems and 50% take home exams.
